Bitcoin Light Adds Lightning Network Support with Breez

Bitcoin is known globally as a secure and decentralized monetary network. However, using on-chain Bitcoin for smaller or everyday payments can sometimes mean waiting for block confirmations and paying network fees that vary depending on demand.

The Lightning Network provides a different experience.

With the latest Bitcoin Light update, users can now access Lightning directly from the wallet, powered by an integration with Breez.

This brings faster Bitcoin payments into the same application used to manage native BTC and Nervos CKB.

Bitcoin for Everyday Payments

Lightning is a payment network built around Bitcoin. Instead of recording every individual payment immediately on the Bitcoin blockchain, it allows payments to be routed through a network designed for rapid settlement.

For users, this means Bitcoin can be used more naturally for activities such as:

  • Sending small amounts to friends
  • Paying Lightning invoices
  • Receiving instant Bitcoin payments
  • Making online or in-person purchases
  • Moving funds without waiting for on-chain confirmations

Lightning does not replace on-chain Bitcoin. It complements it.

On-chain transactions remain essential for long-term settlement and larger transfers, while Lightning provides an efficient option for payments where speed and lower costs matter most.

Lightning Inside Bitcoin Light

Our priority was to integrate Lightning without turning the wallet into a complicated technical tool.

Users can activate Lightning from their Bitcoin Light wallet in a few steps. Once activated, they can send and receive Lightning payments without leaving the application.

The update introduces a dedicated Lightning experience alongside Bitcoin and Nervos. Users can:

  • Receive funds through Lightning
  • Pay supported Lightning invoices
  • Move funds between their on-chain Bitcoin and Lightning balances
  • View their Lightning balance from the wallet
  • Review Lightning transactions and payment details
  • Follow the status of payments directly from the app

The result is a unified experience in which on-chain BTC, Lightning and CKB can be managed from the same interface.

Powered by Breez

Bitcoin Light’s Lightning functionality is built using Breez technology.

Breez provides infrastructure designed to help applications integrate non-custodial Bitcoin payments while abstracting much of the underlying operational complexity associated with Lightning.

This was particularly important for Bitcoin Light. Our goal is to make advanced Bitcoin functionality accessible without requiring users to understand channel management, payment routing or node infrastructure before they can make their first payment.

Users should be able to open the wallet, activate Lightning and start transacting through a clear and familiar mobile experience.

At the same time, Bitcoin Light remains aligned with its self-custodial philosophy. Maintaining user control is a fundamental part of how we approach both Bitcoin and Nervos.

Bridging Bitcoin and Nervos

Lightning support is also an important milestone in the broader evolution of Bitcoin Light.

The wallet was created to bring Bitcoin and Nervos together in a single application. Both networks share a UTXO-based foundation and a strong focus on security, decentralization and user ownership.

Lightning expands the Bitcoin side of that experience, turning Bitcoin Light into more than a place to hold BTC. It provides users with a practical way to use Bitcoin for payments while continuing to access the Nervos ecosystem from the same wallet.

This is central to our long-term vision: providing meaningful utility across both ecosystems rather than simply displaying multiple assets in one interface.

What Comes Next?

Lightning support is a significant addition, but it is not the final destination.

We will continue improving the payment experience, expanding supported functionality and making the interaction between on-chain Bitcoin, Lightning and Nervos increasingly seamless.

As Bitcoin protocols continue to evolve, Bitcoin Light will evaluate new integrations based on the value they can provide to users.

The guiding principle remains simple: advanced technology should result in a better experience.

With Breez and the Lightning Network, Bitcoin Light takes another important step towards making Bitcoin faster, more practical and easier to use from a mobile wallet.
